This website is one of the many resonating consequences produced during the 8th Tanzausbildung Biennale, which took place in Stuttgart from 21 - 27 February 2022. The theme of the Biennale was ‘Coming Together: Solidarity, Encounter, Sustainability’.
This site offers a compilation of much of what was experienced, shared and sensed at the Biennale and was gathered and presented by artists Parvathi Ramanathan and nicola van straaten, at the invitation of Britta Wirthmüller, David Russo and Susanne Triebel. We were given the task of documenting the week through our creative and artistic lenses. ‘Documentation’ is an important conundrum. folded into this word are imperial notions of “capturing” and many dilemmas of representation. We tried not to conceive of ourselves as outside looking in, but rather inside and responding to what’s around us through poetic sensibilities, impressions and story-telling. The result was a publication, a podcast and this website. At the Biennale venue, we set up frameworks and initiated situations where the students and teachers could contribute their own impressions in an immediate manner. The scroll of typewritten sheets on the landing page of this site forms part of this. Much of what was taking place in the performances, workshops, feedback sessions, and the world at large, made its way into these impressions in the space. The ‘doku-kitchen’, a space offered to us by the Biennale team in a corner of the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, also allowed us to retreat for deeper conversations with many participants of the Biennale including students, teachers and workshop facilitators. We were able to record some of these voices and perspectives, shared here as the podcast ‘Coming Together – 8. Tanzausbildung Biennale’. Finally, the publication which was distributed to all participants in the Biennale, consists largely of poetic responses to performances, stories, quotes and resonances from the events throughout the week. Most of these texts were written by us. COVID19 restrictions meant also that this year the Biennale was not a public event, but open only to participating schools and the invited speakers and workshop facilitators. This allowed for a more intimate environment for such exchanges to take place. This compilation does not accurately represent all that happened, but rather poetically and narratively responds to the many moments of encounter, hoping to honour the connections, tensions and all that lies between, in the vital act of coming together. |
